Looking for an excuse to practice your Japanese AND basic math at the same time? Look no further!

... is what I would say, if this calculator actually worked. Sorry.

This attempt at a calculator displays numbers exclusively in Japanese Kanji.

CONTROLS (Might make more sense if you imagine using this keypad instead of a traditional keyboard)

1 = 一
2 = ニ
3 = 三
4 = Add (+)
Q = 四
W = 五E = 六
R = Subtract (-)
A = 七
S = 八D = 九F = Multiply (x)
Z = Clear
X = 0
C = Equals (=)V = Divide (÷)

If you don't know how to read kanji, here's a little cheat sheet:

NUMBERKANJIPRONOUNCIATION (ROMANJI)
1ichi
2ni
3san
4yon*
5go
6roku
7nana*
8hachi
9kyu*
10jyu
16十六jyu roku
60六十roku jyu
64六十四roku jyuu yon
100hyaku
1000sen
10 000
man
100 000
十万jyu man
1 000 000
百万hyaku man

*四, 七, and 九 can also be read as shi, shichi, and ku, but they usually aren't, because shi and shichi sound similar to the japanese word for Death (死), and ku is also how you pronounce Suffering (苦).

KNOWN ISSUES

Numbers must be entered backwards. For example if you wanted to type 六十四 (64), you would type 4, 6, instead of 6, 4.

There should be working code for Addition and Subtraction, but it doesn't appear to print out a number. I do not know why, I'm too tired.

WHY IS THIS PROJECT UNFINISHED?!

In short, I was busy dealing with IRL commitments (Animation College), and I didn't give myself enough time to work on this project.

Actually, this wasn't even what I was originally planning to do for Octojam 10. I had a more ambitious idea (relating to Octoma), but a combination of technical issues and time constraints led me to the decision to shelf the project for now, and try to make something smaller. And yet I still ran out of time...

Late 2023 has not been kind to me. :(
